Disco Cubism

Disco Cubism is a serial exploratory work.
I experiment with the relationship between dance movement and visual forms. It was inspired by Loie Fuller’s dance movement in Dansa Serpentina (1900, anonymous) on YouTube.

In image #1, ten sequences of her dance movements in the video recording were captured, and the outline of her movement were derived from the ten images. Through gradual simplification, the outline of her movement was reduced into diverse geometric forms, and arranged along with the outline images. In image #2, several binary pairs of the ten forms were combined, creating more complex overlapping, linear structures which resulted in image #3 and #4, #5 is more advanced geometric structure with volume and mass.

Ultimately, the original dance movement of Loie Fuller was transformed into a geometric structure with images shown at different angles, creating the Cubist-like abstract structure.
